1er Cru witchcraft….

The wicked witch of the north blew into town last night on her Gredos broomstick, all the way from Madrid to Buenos Aires. She bought with her six of her best Comando G demons, all as malevolent & precocious as each other.
The first naughty Comando out of the G-cauldron was a 2023 La Bruja de Rozas
”Soft stinky nose, juicy & intensly perfumed with a mixed bag of red fruits, a strong hint of leather (umm?), refreshing acidity with very fine tannins.”
then she released upon us….

2023 Rozas
”Pomegranate and strawberry on the nose, hints of orange peel. A soft spicey palate, clean & mineraly.”

2023 Navatalgordo
“Cherries & strawberry on the nose. Juicy and smooth. Gentle tannins with a refreshing finish”

2022 Peña La Mora 1er Cru
”A powerful nose of raspberries & cherries. Hints of tobacco spice and a sensational lingering finish, very tasty.”
2022 La Breña 1er Cru
”Dark red fruit nose, fresh & well integrated tannic palate. A hint of grapefruit peel. A great need to drink more”

2023 Villanueva
”A touch lighter than the 1er Crus above, but still a very charming Grenache, cold granite and violets on the finish, lingering & again a rather tasty wine”

2022 El Tamboril
”This wine was served last in the line up and I can understand why. It is more of a Barolo style Garnacha. Raspberry, grapefruit and a wide chalky finish. Great wine with soft, rounded tannins. I would love to come back to this wine in 2032 if there is any knocking around that is.”

During the evening, a couple of other wines, local to Sierra de Gedos were put into the mix, not just as a distraction but to make the case for other Garnachas. It was not at all necessary. Those boys up there at Comando G still rule the roost and ”chapeau” to them both, outstanding wines from Le Vin de Mesa to the 1er Crus.
