Sassicaia in excelsis

1988 Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri

This was Giacomo Tachis’ favorite vintage and he considered it to be even better than the 1985. The ruby color is intensely concentrated, profound and certainly now what one would expected from a wine of its age. The aromas are complex and concentrated with intense and elegant scents of red fruit. The mouthfeel is bold, concentrated and full with sweet tannins. The pleasing persistence has an after-aroma that brings back the bouquet.”

´The 1988 Sassicaia retains its spellbinding bouquet; pure black plum, tobacco, melted tar and liquorices, demonstrating thrilling definition and life-affirming vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with a beguiling sense of symmetry: perfect balance between austerity and Tuscan voluptuousness, yet the complement each other rather than cancelling each other out. Crushed stones, a touch of black pepper, burnt toast, very fresh on the Graves-like finish, this is Sassicaia in excelsis.’ NM

R.I.P
Over the last weeks, most of us have been reading obits and tributes to Steven Spurrier from all four corners of the vinous world. There is not much one can add to them, so I will leave you here with a photograph taken back in the day when he was punting wine out of Caves de la Madelaine (Paris). R.I.P.S.S.
