There’s a natural mystic blowing through the air..
“..and if you listen carefully now you will hear, that his could be the first trumpet, might as well be the last. Many more will have to suffer, many more will have to die. Don’t ask me why, things are not the way they used to be, I won’t tell no lie, one and all got to face reality now.”
Robert Nesta Marley
..and today’s reality check, thanks for that one Bob, is to let you know my dears, that even the plague did not keep us away from the Bordeaux 2019 vintage. With all it’s usual semi-hype and scaled down production, thanks to the summer drought and then refreshing pre-harvest rains. Most chateau produced excellent fruits, and very little was harvested. Great wines, small production and proper sensible prices for a change, it’s real!
2019 Alter Ego de Chateau Palmer, Margaux: Is made up of 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon & 9% Petit Verdot and tasted here at the Chateau, May 2020, with Thomas Duroux.
“Black, purple core, but a shade lighter than most of the grands vins of the appellation which is very much what this is. Ample, generous and defined by both the very ripe Merlot and the very fresh Cabernet Sauvignon. Pure, lifted and quite aerial. Griotte and Morello cherries, frangipane. Sappy, juicy and quite spicy and peppery on the lovely long finish.”
And then, when Jane Anson tasted the wine in Bordeaux at the end of May 2020, this what she had to report.
“Cinnamon spice on the nose, with a patisserie edge to the fruits that gives a rich, creamy impression. As ever with the Palmer stable, you can pick out the individual flavors clearly, with careful and precise delineation of cassis, bilberry, slate and tobacco notes. Overall this is an OUTSTANDING Alter Ego that puts the emphasis on pleasure. The tannins are also extremely precise, feathery and pliable. An extremely low 37pp of SO2 and in keeping with biodynamic principles, with a desire to let the fruit speak.”
